반기문 전 유엔사무총장은 부드러움과 강인한 인물로 통합니다. ‘부드럽지만 안으로는 강하고 강하다’라는 평가를 받으며 외유내강에 강이 하나 더 붙은 ‘외유내강강(外柔內剛剛)형으로 불립니다.
‘미소를 머금은 따뜻한 표정과 매너처럼 반 전(前)총장은 큰 소리를 내지 않는 것으로 유명합니다. 그러면서도 한번 마음먹은 일은 반드시 이루는 강한 의지를 갖췄다는 게 주변의 평가입니다.
반 전(前)총장은 1962년 충주고 재학시절, 뛰어난 영어실력으로 미국적십자사가 주최하는 영어 경시대회에서 1등을 차지하여 미국 방문의 기회를 얻었습니다. 반 전(前)총장은 미국 적십자사의 주선으로 존F 케네디 당시 미국 대통령을 접견했고 그 자리에서 그는 장래희망이 외교관이라고 말했습니다.
1970년 2월 서울대학교 외교학과 졸업과 동시에 외무고시에 합격하여 5월 외무부에 들어가 40여 년 동안 외교관의 길을 걸어 왔습니다.
2007년에 한국인 최초 유엔사무총장으로 선출되었고, 2011. 6. 21. 유엔 총회에서 유엔 총회에서 만장일치로 5년 연임이 확장되어 2016년까지 유엔을 이끌게 되었습니다.
제8대 유엔사무총장으로 반기문은 칠레와 아이티의 지진 복구지원, 코트디부아르 내전해결에 큰 기여를 했으며 '아랍의 봄'으로 불리는 중동, 북아프리카 사태 대 적극적으로 시위대 편에 서서 국제 사회 여론을 선도하면서 강력한 리더십을 선보였다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
이와 함께 기후변화, 여성, 아동인권문제 등을 유엔의 최우선 과제로 끌어올렸고, 유엔 개헌을 통한 투명성과 효율성 제고에 큰 기여를 했다는 평가를 아울러 받고 있습니다.
우리나라에 대해서도 정치적, 경제적 성장에 대응하는 인권, 보건, 교육, 환경 등 다양한 분야에서 국제사회 내 조력자 역할을 담당했으며 선진국과 개발도상국 사이의 가교 역할을 당부하기도 했습니다.
반 전 총장은 충주고와 충주여고간 학생회장단 가부교류로 만난 유순택 여사와의 사이에 낳은 1남 2녀를 두고 있습니다.

He is recognized as "Being gentle in appearance, but sturdy and tough in spirit", so is called 'The strong iron hand in the velvet glove', which has additional word 'Strong' from 'The iron hand in the velvet glove'.
He is known for a person who is never vociferous but is gentle and warmhearted. Nevertheless, once he makes up his mind on something, he always accomplishes with strong willpower, according to people around him.
When he went to Chungju High School, he gained an opportunity to visit America by winning a prize at an English speech competition hosted by the US government in 1962. Secretary Ban met John F. Kennedy through the American Red Cross and there, he said he wanted to be a diplomat.
As he graduated from Diplomatic Science at Seoul National University in February 1970, he passed the Foreign Service Examination. He was employed by Ministry of Foreign Service Examination. He was employed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in May, 1970 and worked as a diplomat for over 40 years.
On June 21 2011, his second term for 5 more years was decided unanimously at the UN General Assembly and led the UN until 2016. For the last 5 years while he served as the 8th Secretary General, he greatly contributed to the earthquake-recovery in Chile and Haiti and the settlement of civil war in Cote d`Ivoire. He showed a strong leadership by actively supporting protesters of Arab Spring in Middle East and North Africa leading the public opinion of international society.
He also made such matters as climate change and human rights of women and children the top priorities of the UN. He is considered to have made d big contribution to improving transparency and effectiveness through the reform of the UN. He asked Korean government to play a role in various fields such as human right, health care, education and environment as an assistant of international society that copes with political and economical growth, and to act as a mediator between developed countries and developing countries.
He has one son and two daughters with Mrs. Yoo Soon-taek, who he met at school leaders exchange between Chungju High School and Chungju Girls`s High School.
